Protect Your Athletic Floor Investment with Proven MFMA Floor Care

Whether your facility installed a new maple athletic floor this summer, completed a full resurfacing, or simply a screen-and-recoat, the beginning of the school year is the perfect time to establish a floor-care routine.

A quality maple athletic floor is an important investment in your facility, your programs and your athletes. Protecting that investment requires more than responding when damage appears. Consistent preventive maintenance can help preserve the floor’s appearance, performance and service life.

Begin with Proper Curing

Before allowing athletic activities, foot traffic or special events, confirm that the final finish coat has fully cured. Drying and curing are not the same, and cure times vary by product and environmental conditions. Always follow the finish manufacturer’s instructions and the guidance provided by your MFMA sport floor contractor.

Floor covers, equipment and other materials should not be placed on the surface until the finish manufacturer’s recommended full cure time has passed. MFMA also advises avoiding heavy traffic on a newly finished floor for at least one week unless the finish manufacturer directs otherwise.

Make Daily Maintenance a Priority

Dirt and grit act like abrasives. When tracked onto the playing surface, they can scratch and dull the finish. MFMA recommends sweeping the floor daily with a properly treated dust mop. Floors receiving heavy use may need to be dust-mopped as often as three times per day.

Place walk-off mats at gym entrances to capture dirt, moisture, salt and debris before they reach the maple surface. Remove and clean the mats daily, inspect the floor beneath them and include those areas in regular maintenance. Mats left in place for extended periods may trap moisture or cause discoloration.

Spills and moisture should always be wiped up promptly. Remove heel and shoe marks with an approved floor cleaner applied using a soft cloth or dust mop. Use only products and procedures recommended by the floor finish manufacturer. Household cleaners can damage the finish, leave a sticky or slippery residue and affect the floor’s playing characteristics.

Control the Environment

Maple naturally absorbs and releases moisture as environmental conditions change. Excessive humidity can cause the floor to expand, while overly dry conditions can lead to shrinkage and gaps between boards.

Keep the facility’s heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system operating throughout the year. MFMA recommends maintaining indoor temperatures between 55 and 75 degrees. For optimal performance, relative humidity should be maintained within a 15% range. For example, between 35% and 50%. In addition to being within the ideal relative humidity for health and comfort, a range of 35% and 50% equalizes wood moisture content of flooring when kiln dried and manufactured per MFMA requirements.

Periodically inspect the floor for signs of tightening, shrinkage or moisture intrusion. Check doors, windows and other possible leak locations during wet weather, and keep expansion voids free of debris.

Protect the Floor During Every Activity

Athletic floors are often used for much more than sports. Assemblies, dances, graduations, equipment moves and community events can all expose the surface to additional wear.

Use a floor-covering system designed specifically for maple athletic floors during non-athletic events—but only after confirming that the finish is fully cured. Limit the amount of time the floor remains covered so the maple can adjust naturally to the surrounding environment.

Always protect the surface when moving bleachers, portable goals, lifts, stages or other heavy equipment. Inspect wheels before equipment enters the gym. Damaged, crowned or center-ridged wheels can create concentrated loads and cause serious damage.

MFMA does not recommend automated power-scrubbing equipment for routine maintenance. Excess water and equipment weight can harm the boards, paint, finish and supporting floor system—and may affect applicable warranties.

Build a Long-Term Maintenance Partnership

Even a well-maintained athletic floor requires periodic professional attention. MFMA recommends annual screening and recoating for most maple gymnasium floors, although facility use, maintenance practices and overall floor condition will determine the appropriate schedule.

Keep maintenance records, follow the finish manufacturer’s instructions and contact your MFMA member sport floor contractor before attempting repairs or changing cleaning procedures.

Your new or renewed floor was built to perform. Give it the protection it deserves by following MFMA’s proven maintenance recommendations from the first day of use. A few consistent steps each day can help keep the surface safe, attractive and game-ready for years to come.
