The "Face of MFMA" is a quarterly initiative where we interview our members and ask them to share some perspective on their job, organization, daily life, and how they are making an impact on the sports flooring industry.

We are pleased to announce our Winter '22 Face of MFMA, Jose Diaz, and share his insights in the interview below.

MFMA: How did you get started in the sports floor industry?

Jose Diaz: I am actually a Civil Engineer by trade. Upon graduation from The University of Miami “THE U,” I interviewed for a large interior subcontractor in Miami, “Lotspeich Co. Inc.,” and the rest is history - started in the flooring division, and here I am 44 years later, as passionate as I was when I started.

MFMA: Who was the biggest influence in your career?

JD: Two people I always looked up to:

- My dad owned his own glass and glazing company and role-modeled for me the type of the business owner I wanted to be. One that works hard and is always honest.

- My first boss (and then partner), Jay Lotspeich, who taught me the business and the importance of humility.

MFMA: How does your company help the sports flooring industry?

JD: We provide quality work at reasonable prices while always trying to provide our customers the service and quality they want, need and deserve.

MFMA: What do you feel are your keys to success?

JD: Honesty, perseverance and hard work. If you have those three, it rubs into the people that work with you.

MFMA: What one thing has impacted the sports flooring industry the most in your career?

JD: Computers, without question. They have allowed us to use time more efficiently.

MFMA: Do you have a saying or mantra that helps you stay motivated or motivate others?

JD: I have always liked the following, and I have a BIG sign in my office that says, “If it is not right, do not do it; if it is not true, do not say it.”

MFMA: What is the weirdest thing you have ever seen done to a sports flooring surface?

JD: When I was attending Niles East High School in Skokie, Illinois, we had donkey softball games inside the gym. Little did I know that I was going to make a living selling maple gym floors.

MFMA: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

JD: Selling floors while walking with a maple cane. I love this business and all the friends from this industry that I have acquired because of it.
