Jared-Photo.jpgThe "Face of MFMA" is a quarterly initiative where we interview our members and ask them to share some perspective on their job, organization, daily life, and how they are making an impact on the sports flooring industry.

We are delighted to introduce our Summer 2021 Face of MFMA, Jared Jellison, and share his insights in the interview below.

MFMA: How did you get started in the sports floor industry?

Jared Jellison: In the early 80s, my Father heard people talking about their newfound love for racquetball and decided to run with it. It was at that time that he started a business installing racquetball courts. I grew up watching him, and when I was old enough, I joined him. I spent most of my summer and winter school breaks working hard alongside him.

MFMA: Who was the biggest influence in your career?

JJ: It was my Father, Don Jellison. He got me started in it, showed me what a strong work ethic looked like, and released the reigns to me when he saw that I was able to handle it on my own.

A close second would be Floyd Shelton, who had taught me many things and has guided me when I needed it over the years. I wouldn't be where I am today without these two men.

MFMA: How does your company help the sports flooring industry?

JJ: We always try to put our best foot forward no matter the situation. We want our customers to have the best-looking floors, but more importantly, we want them to perform the best for their needs. In doing this, we educate our customers on how to care for their existing floors and/or educate them on the latest systems out there.

MFMA: What do you feel are your keys to success?

JJ: A couple of things:

Keeping up with the latest information and educating my employees is huge because this industry is ever-changing. From the paints to the finishes to the floor systems, there is always a lot of changes. I have found that going to the install schools when possible is helpful, and it allows me to network with others in the industry. We are able to trade tips and tricks with one another.

Keeping in contact with my customers and making sure that we are keeping up with their needs is a really big one for me. I really value my customers and try my best to show them that. I want customers for life.

MFMA: What one thing has impacted the sports flooring industry the most in your career?

JJ: The lumber pricing is increasing so rapidly, plywood alone going up approximately 400% in 6 months this year has impacted sports flooring more than anything else over my career. We've found it necessary to change verbiage in our bids and contracts due to the fear of this continuing and/or happening again.

MFMA: Do you have a saying or mantra that helps you stay motivated or motivate others?

JJ: Summer is our busiest time of year, and I will tell my employees that we just need to make it through till school starts when the storm calms.

MFMA: What is the weirdest thing you have ever seen done to a sports flooring surface?

JJ: I once had to sand a floor because someone actually mopped up the finish.

MFMA: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

JJ: I see myself continuing to grow the company and providing athletic facilities with a great sports floor service but hopefully with some added vacation time.

I would also love to continue the tradition and teach my son the business so that he is able to take it over one day.
