Facts About Floors: Detailing the process behind NBA hardwood courts

Tromp through the forests of the Upper Midwest—think Wisconsin and Michigan, specifically—and you’ll run across plenty of acer saccharum or hard maple, the kind that makes up 29 of 30 NBA hardwood courts.   “This is where the greatest density of that particular specie of maple is grown,” Doug Hamar, Horner Flooring president, tells “It is selected over others because it is harder than other hardwoods, is a tighter grained product, and is light in color.”

Maintaining Proper Environments for Maple Sports Floors

What is excessive shrinkage? No, it’s not George Costanza, “I was in the pool” kind of excessive shrinkage. If you can fit a quarter between the side joints of the maple flooring strips, you can consider that excessive. Excessive expansion is harder to measure, but easy to identify. Check the perimeter of the floor system to ensure the floor system is not in contact with the walls or other vertical obstructions. Excessive expansion can lead to cupping or buckling of the maple sports floor.

2017 – 2018 MFMA Scholarship Winners Announced

The MFMA Scholarship Program encourages educational success in the fields related to the sports flooring business. We appreciate and understand that it takes many trained professionals to make our industry run. The process of turning trees into high-end sports surfaces encompasses numerous skilled hands. And once the sports floors are installed, even more trained professionals use the floors in their careers.  We want to support all levels of this process in their educational and career goals.

High School Basketball Rules Changes 2017 - 2018

1-13-2: The coaching box shall be outlined outside the side of the court on which the scorer's and timer's table and team benches are located. The area shall be bounded by a line drawn 28 feet from the end line towards the Division line. At this point a line drawn from the sideline toward the team bench becomes the end of the coaching box going towards the end line.

Do You Have A “Dead Spot” On Your Gym Floor?

In layman’s terms, “dead spots” are locations on a sports floor where ball rebound is markedly less than on the majority of the rest of the surface. Many flooring systems exhibit vibrations and sound variations when a basketball is bounced at different locations. Often, areas where vibrations and sound variations are observed are mistakenly termed “dead spots.” Provided the ball rebounds to a reasonably consistent height in comparison to other locations on the floor, areas where vibrations and sound variations are present do not typically qualify as true “dead spots.”
